Galeries Lafayette
The Galeries Lafayette Berlin at Gendarmenmarkt is a department store of French origin on Friedrichsstraße. It is also called Quartier 207 and houses on 8000 m2 and five storeys of high-demand goods, including a delicatessen department in the basement, which mainly offers French specialities.
Under the leadership of the GDR, Friedrichsstrasse was to be converted into a grand boulevard and boulevard street in the 1980s and 1990s. With the fall of the Wall, this project also collapsed. The building, designed by Jean Nouvel, is next to the Academy of Arts on Pariser Platz, the first new building with a glass façade, on top of the vertical garden by the artist Patrick Blanc. Galerie Lafayette opened its doors on 29 February 1996, making it one of the first companies to establish a department store in the former eastern part of Berlin after German reunification.
The department store offers its visitors fashion, shoes, accessories and even a men’s spa on the fourth floor. In the basement there is a huge gourmet selection with a department for tableware and a French bookstore.
Here you can get everything if you have the necessary change in your wallet. The company mainly distributes luxury brands, with a wide selection of new fashion trends, international fashion, must-have accessories and exclusive beauty products.
JUMPBerlin says:
On an extensive shopping day you will be able to drift through the different departments and enjoy the luxury. On the lowest floor French delicacies and specialities of all kinds are sold. Further highlights are the great champagne bar, where you can taste different sparkling wines. All in all, the Galeries Lafayette exudes a lot of French charm and brings haute couture and haute cuisine to the mother city.
