The Monbijoupark in Berlin – Mitte is a popular place for strolling and leisure. On over 3.5 hectares you can relax, sit down near the Spree or simply enjoy the day. Monbijoupark is located between S-Bahn stations Hackescher Markt at Hackesche Höfe and Oranienburger Straße. Until 1959, Monbijou Castle stood on the site where the park is located today. It was built as a pleasure palace in rococo style for Countess Wartenberg. During the Second World War it was destroyed and the remains removed for political reasons. Large parts of the castle were still preserved, but these were removed under the leadership of the GDR, as were the remains of the Berlin city palace, since there was no money available for the reconstruction of a noble palace in the communist-oriented state. Opposite Museum Island, a newly designed park was created along the Spree according to plans by the landscape architecture office Lützow 7. Instead of the Monbijouschloss there is now the Monbijoupark. Between Friedrichsstraße, Spree, Oranienburger Straße and Monbijoustraße a green area was created, which serves the Berliners today for relaxation and recreation. The park was redesigned in 2006/2007. The more than three hectares of lawn make the park a small green oasis in the middle of Berlin’s historically significant surroundings.
